"Everything is designed. Few things are designed well." --Brian Reed
Graphic Designers are marketers. Their role is to get people talking, and that’s what makes a truly effective slogan; one that is remembered.
When you think of graphic design, do you think of artistic advertisements? Eye-grabbing graphics on websites? Stunningly arranged spreads in magazines? While these examples certainly fit under the graphic design definition, the term encompasses a lot: posters, infographics, book covers, product labels, logos, business cards, signs, website layouts, mobile apps, software interfaces—the list goes on.
Graphic design is an extraordinary talent and skill set that experts work years to develop. The ability to create something out of nothing is an extraordinary one, especially when that something can become stunning visuals and engaging logos that can make a huge impact on your business.
“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” – Leonardo da Vinci, artist & inventor
Define The Task: What kind of business? What should the finished product be? What format and materials should be used?
Research: Generate and gather ideas and notes. Look at other examples in the same field.
Brainstorming: Word maps, word associations, word opposites, visual references, metaphors, similes.
Sketching: Create several thumbnail sketches. Arrange the main elements. Use illustrations, photographs, and typeface.
Design Direction: Develop 2-3 of thumbnails. This is the rough proposal for final design.
Tight Sketch: This is comprehensive sketch. These layouts show actual dimensions and precise placements of the elements.
Client Review: Present your tight sketches to client. Client may wish to change elements.
Finalizing: Create the final piece. Prepare files for printer or etc.

Inspiration can often seem illusive and out-of-reach when you need it most.
Unfortunately, you often can’t call it a day when you’re feeling uninspired or frustrated by your designs — or lack thereof. Oftentimes, you’re working on a strict deadline, keeping you up late into the night thinking, How can I make this design great?
When this is the case, it’s likely helpful to read some wisdom from some true masters of design.
Keep reading, and remember, it’s like Maya Angelou said — “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
